Nice piece. I didn't see the article in the Times. It does remind me of when my former newspaper editor in Delaware became the Money page editor at USAToday.com in the early/mid-'90s. I remember him telling me about the ulcer-inducing pace of being on a 24-hour news cycle, a lot different from a once-a-day printed piece. And that was before the Blog Era. Last I heard he was still in the job, though, so I guess he's figured out a balance -- or is about to keel over.

In Jan 2008 JISC and the British Library released a study/research findings on the 'Google Generation' (those born after 1993)and found that there existed 'myths' about their competencies ... however, is not too reassuring when you see the following from JISC: "...although young people demonstrate an ease and familiarity with computers, they rely on the most basic search tools and do not possess the critical and analytical skills to asses the information that they find on the web." So ... is 'asses' a UK thing? Or just a typo?

I think that your observations are very significant, and point to the changes coming with mobile technology. While for now we see a simple new set of abbreviations to indicate different events, verbs, ideas, etc.; it's really about the changes in how youth is communicating WHILE using mobile technology that seems most significant. For example, in the NYTimes story, the father is struck by how his daughter is texting about a topic with her friends also in the car, to keep the 'conversation' private. This type of back channel communication is only the beginning ... imagine the changes enabled by micropayments via mobile phone ... including 'auctions' for a parking spot ! Or an auction for a seat in a restaurant ... it's really daunting and challenging to imagine.

I think it's interesting to see how txt abbreviations and language developed. I mostly use complete sentences and words when I can, but I think that is mostly because I've trained myself to do so. I've been trained to do this because the mobile devices that I've used since I've started using SMS have all had a full keyboard (the past 5 years). Before that I've always felt too lazy to piece together a message with a normal phone's keypad. So a part of me thinks that the txt language has not only risen through the 160 character limitation of SMS, but also the ease of use to type in a message with a standard phone number pad.

I agree with you. I like Quarterlife. I really like it better online as 8 minute episodes. This model works for my lifestyle and I wonder if this might be something that more Internet shows will continue to use. It seems, to me at least, that a lot of people my age are looking for quick bursts of quality Inter-tainment that is more than just a better than average or incredibly hilarious YouTube video (though they have their place, don't get me wrong).

i actually like quarterlife, which is the most frustrating thing for me. could it be tweaked here and there? sure. but overall the idea is flawless in terms of the demo/topic/distribution media - whether it's the internet or television. had the content been tweaked slightly for on-air purposes, it may have reached/appealed to an entirely new audience other than the fans who watch it online. In fact, it may have drawn those people to watch on-air as they were getting something new and fresh. who knows. bums me out.

Love the rant. My biggest problem with Quarterlife is that it's no good. Herskovitz/Zwick have a penchant for really whiny characters. Content is key.

haha, sure i'll try and tweak the font. wordpress, me and fonts are not very friendly but i'll see what i can do.

and you're correct, i don't think television is dead. i think the concept of television is evoving, though - started with tivo and it's continuing to evolve. like everything else, it's experiencing the wrath of the push turned pull model.

So you are one of the few who don't think TV is dead. I would agree with you. One extraneous comment - can you make your type bigger. So hard to read for someone as ancient as myself.
